We are pleased to announce that the restoration and strengthening work on the historic Carnegie Library in Thames has been completed. Our carpenters and foreman working on the job have really enjoyed the challenge of restoring the building to it's original condition, while raising the earthquake standards to comply with today's safety requirements. New electrics have been installed, toilets have been upgraded and leaky windows have been repaired.
The building is a Heritage Class 2 building. It was opened on 2 November 1905 as the Thames Library. It functioned as the Thames Library right up until 1990 when the library moved to larger premises. The building was then used by the Thames Repertory Theatre until quite recently.
The refurbished building will be the home of THE TREASURY, which has been established by the Coromandel Heritage Trust. THE TREASURY will be an archive and family history centre, which will preserve the history and personal stories of the region and its people. There are future plans to create a heat, light and dust controlled room for the storage of old and irreplaceable items.
There will be an official opening on 15th April 2009 where the US Consolate General to New Zealand will be the guest of honour.
